Digital Citizenship
In this lesson we'll discover digital citizenship and we'll put into practice what we learn WHENEVER we use information and communication technology! Your grades will be tied directly to your Digital Citizenship!
What is Digital Citizenship?
1. Digital Citizenship is about practicing respect while using the net!
2. It's about being concerned for all citizens, no matter what their ethnicity may be.
3. It's about using the Net responsibly -- respecting copyright laws, anti-cyberbullying, literacy awareness.
4. It's about using the Net for positive outcomes for yourself and for others.
But, what does that mean? Let's break it down:
Manners -- DC is all about the old expression "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." And, "Do unto yourself!"
...What do these mean to you?
...Share examples of bummer digital experiences (no responses to your emails? bullies on your MySpace?)
Literacy -- how do you know when a web site has valid information? How can you make sure that someone has not made up the whole thing? Or, it may be a cool site....but how do I know if it's for real? Let's take a look at this topic in more depth.
Rights and responsibilities -- just because a lot of what we do on the Internet is done behind our monitor doesn't mean we can ignore the rights of others and the rules of law. There are very strict regulations for the use of information you get from the Net. You know those little ads you see when you rent a DVD where they show people stealing and then they say copying this video is a crime? The same goes for stealing information from the Internet. Let's take a look at this topic in more depth.
Health -- how you sit, type and view the monitor can affect you!
The way you sit at and interact with the computer can greatly affect your health! Look at me....I now need glasses from reading the computer monitor too much, with poor lighting. Many people experience severe pain in their wrists (Carpal Tunnel Syndrome) from typing incorrectly and others suffer from terrible neck and back pains from sitting incorrectly.
Let's take a quick peek at 8 Tips for Your Health.
Safety -- cyber bullies, lurkers, other trouble-makers
Cyberspace is a wonderful place to go....but there are dangers! Just like any city, you have to be careful where you travel, where you play and what you say. Being CyberSafe means:
1. Not sharing any of your personal information
2. Knowing about the risks of going online (cyber bullies, predators, identity theft, etc.) and avoiding them
3. Protecting the computers you use
Let's learn how to be CyberSafe!
Practice DC
You will be expected to practice DC at all times in school, and while engaged in school activities outside of school. This means homework. This means how you interact with your fellow students, teachers and administration.
In order to use SAS digital technology you must review, understand and sign the Acceptable Use Policy. Let's review it now. Then, you'll take it home and have your parents sign it too. REMEMBER...you must have this form signed before you can use any SAS digital technology!
Do: 1. Review the SAS AUP. 2) Sign and return the SAS AUP by next class
